Jennifer Wilkinson Thomas is a native Mississippi artist who is inspired by God’s creative color palette. Her artwork involves the application of thick oil paint to canvas or wooden art panel using only a palette knife, creating a visually expressive and textured impasto effect.
Jennifer is also a freelance graphic designer, but she is thankful to find time for her outlet of creating colorful paintings that contrast the precision and formula that defines the parameters of her graphic design work. As a graphic designer, she has found that fine art is usually more personalthan design, evoking emotions and connecting with the viewer in different ways.
“Certain places evoke memories, and that is why I enjoy painting landscapes. I compose my paintings using my photos taken near my home or while traveling. As a graphic designer, I can crop a photo on my computer to focus on a specific area. When painting, I select colors that creatively represent the colors that you see in nature. My smaller paintings can even be color studies before working on a larger canvas. I find that I love the smaller paintings, and I often paint the same scene multiple times - with each painting being a bit different. I enjoy the unique challenge of using only a palette knife to apply thick oil paint, and some of my larger paintings on canvas can take weeks to dry. Therefore, I have to plan ahead.”
